The BMI estimate for children and adolescents ages 2 to 18 takes into account age, gender, height, and weight.
If your BMI falls between:
- below 18.5 – you’re in the underweight range
- between 18.5 and 24.9 – you’re in the underweight range
- between 25 and 29.9 – you’re in the overweight range
- between 30 and 39.9 – you’re in the obese range

Your ethnicity can also affect your risk for some diseases. For instance, persons of South Asian descent with a healthy BMI of 23 may be at a greater risk for certain health issues, such as diabetes.
If you are pregnant, you should not use BMI as a measurement. If you’re concerned about your weight, consult your midwife or physician.
